“A FAMILY CHURCH WITH A COMMUNITY SPIRIT” OCTOBER 2005

My one-year anniversary at with FBC of Macedon is quickly approaching!  I am grateful for the people I met at FBC and the many opportunities I had while working under Pastor Carol.

My school requires a year of supervised ministry for my degree. I will be taking my supervised ministry course this year and FBC has been approved as my ministry site.  Because the goal for the class is to become familiar with the many different facets of ministry, I will be continuing my visitation duties but also taking on some additional responsibilities such as attending various meetings, preaching on a regular schedule and teaching a Thursday evening Bible study.

In addition to Pastor Carol, a group of five lay members will help in my growth and evaluating my progress through the school year:  Jeff B., Jane B., Robbin H., Dana M. and Andy W. From time to time other members of FBC will be asked for input. I am very much looking forward to the upcoming year and benefiting from the generous support and valuable experiences you continue to provide to me.    In Christ's love,

  David V.

Local Church to Present “Rainbow Review” by Christy Long - On October 21st-23rd, St. John’s Lutheran Church of Farmington will be presenting “Rainbow Review”, a comical telling of the well-known Bible story, Noah and the arc.  The 3rd-12th graders, along with a few adults, have developed a cast of animals and Bible characters.  “Rainbow Review” is approximately 35 minutes long and full of toe-tapping music and fall-out-of-your-seat humor.  Friday and Saturday night’s production, October 21st & 22nd, are at 7 PM.  Sunday morning, October 23rd, the productions will be during the normal church services, 8:30 & 11 AM.  The musical is free and appropriate for all ages.  Any questions, please call the church office at 315-986-3045.  Hope to see you there!!

After the back to school rush, Cameron Community Center is low on kids' fall/winter clothes, particularly (but not only) boys ages 5-12ish.  If you have any in good condition that you would like to donate, see Robbin H. or call the church office.

2005 Operation Christmas Child Mission: Dear Friends,
This year First Baptist Church of Macedon will again be participating in Operation Christmas Child, the Samaritan’s Purse global evangelism project that demonstrates God’s love to needy children through gift-filled shoeboxes. This is a way to introduce Jesus Christ to them and their families and many of these lives will be changed forever.

This project for our church will begin October 9 and run through November 6th. Collection drop off sites will be collecting from November 14 through November 21st, so we need to be sure we have them turned in at church by November 6th.

These shoeboxes are a tangible demonstration of God’s love to children and families living in difficult circumstances, and can prepare hearts to hear the Good New of Jesus Christ. As the gifts are distributed, local Christians offer colorful storybooks about Jesus to the children in their own language and local churches continue to minister to the children through Operation Christmas Child follow-up Bible study materials.

Shoeboxes can be wrapped or unwrapped. Box tops and bottoms are to be wrapped separately so they are accessible. A $5 donation for shipping and other handling expenses with a check made out to Samaritan’s Purse with OCC in the memo line should be placed in an envelope and taped to the top of the boxes. Determine if your gift will be for a boy or girl and the child’s age category (2 to 4; 5 to 9; 10 to 14) and place a label on the box. (Labels will be provided.)  You can fill the boxes with the following items:

School supplies: pens, pencils & sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, coloring books, chalk, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, etc.

Toys: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, small Etch A Sketch*, toys that light up or make noise (supply extra batteries please), Slinky*, etc.

Hygiene items: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap in a plastic bag, combs, washcloths, etc.

Candy: hard candy in a plastic bag, lollipops, mints and gum are all acceptable.

Other suggestions: sunglasses, flashlights with extra batteries, ball caps, socks, T-shirts, toy jewelry, hair clips, watches, small picture books, etc.

DO NOT INCLUDE: Used items, toy guns, knives, or other war-related items, chocolate or perishable food items (no Tootsie Rolls, cookies, crackers, M&M’s*, etc.), Liquids of any kind (no shampoo, lotion, bubbles, liquid soap), breakable items (no china dolls, snow globes).  Help us bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to those in need and help to brighten your Christmas by bringing joy to another.  God Bless you for your support and prayers for this mission.  Cheryl R.

Dear Church Family. I want to thank the Church Family and everyone who sent me cards and best wishes while I was laid up with my fractured elbow.  Also a special thank you to Carol for her visit.  Walt

Dearest Church Family, Apologies for not writing much last year.  I hope to be more on top of things this year.  Anyways, I have finally moved back into Smith.   I have my own room, and it's almost all set up.  I came back early to be a student academic advisor to the building I am living in.  Training starts tomorrow.  Yikes!  Classes don't start until September 8th, so I still have time to prepare.  Well, I just wanted to say hi!  See you all in November (hopefully).  Sincerely, Lindsey A.

Women's Philathea News:  We are going to have Women's Sunday on October 9, 2005 at 10 a.m.  There will not be two services on that Sunday.  We will be having a puppet skit during the time for children.  And we will be handing out wild balloons just before the end of the service.  We also will be doing a special mission offering besides the regular offering.  A scholarship fund to assist women seminarian students at Arab Baptist Theo-Logical seminary, Beirut, Lebanon.  Goal is $13,000.  Mark your calendars and bring your children, grandchildren for a little fun, and please give generously.  We will be having out next meeting on Wednesday, October 19 at church at 7 p.m.  Pastor Carol will be the host and Jane will be doing the program.  Saturday, October 8, 2005 is the ABW Fall Missionary Meeting at Newark First Baptist Church; 11:15 registration; 11:30 business meeting; 12 lunch; 1 missionary.  Please bring a dish to pass and table service.  Dessert and beverage will be furnished.  October 14-15, 2005 is the Plain 'N Fancy Sale at Fairport Baptist Home.  October 20-22, 2005 is the Rummage Sale at NFBC.  To be wild about Jesus is to take the risk that Jesus himself took for us.  The love of Christ urges us to live exactly the same way he lived.  Betty S.

JOYS & CONCERNS:  Joys!  Mabel B, Gladys D's mother turned 94! She lives at Perinton Park Manor Nursing Home.  Becca & Kevin S. are the proud parents of Chase Michael born on September 7, 2005.  He weighed 8 lbs. 14 oz. and all are doing well.  Grandma and Grandpa will be traveling to South Carolina to spend some time with them.  Dan & Angela D. celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary.  Concerns:  Susie, friend of Jeanie and Wayne F, has liver and colon cancer.  They ask for our prayers for a miracle.  Mae was hospitalized at Highland Hospital.  Sally R. is terminally ill and she and her family appreciate our prayers.  Robert, Jean B's friend, has been ill and appreciates our prayers.  Lauren's aunt and family were involved in the hurricane but are doing fine and appreciate our prayers.  Frances, Irma H's grandmother, is quite ill.  She is in Blossoms View Nursing Home in Sodus.  Christian Sympathy is extended to:  the family and friends of Lee, 19 years old, tragically killed in a motorcycle/car accident.  This is the second son this family has lost.

The following message is from Rev. Dr. A. Roy Medley, General Secretary ABCUSA:  Greetings, American Baptists and Friends, The devastation and destruction of Hurricane Katrina has taken its toll on our country in ways that we cannot yet begin to imagine. Thousands have been killed, tens of thousands left with nothing, countless more are lacking the basic needs of humanity, unable in the chaos to find shelter, food, or water.  As American Baptists, we have long been a people of compassion and kindness, rising to the occasion whenever there is need. The devastation of Katrina is beyond what many of us can fathom, yet American Baptists are asking what they can do to help.   National Ministries has developed a Katrina Response page to highlight the ways that ABCUSA, with its partners, are ministering in the aftermath of this storm, and what American Baptist churches and individuals can do to help. This will be a dynamic “work in progress,” being updated regularly with relief needs as they arise. Please visit the site at http://www.nationalministries.org/katrina/index.cfm.  The outpouring of generosity from American Baptists has already been incredible. But financial assistance is still needed. Donations can be submitted through American Baptist online giving at Give Now by selecting One Great Hour of Sharing and, after logging in, using the “Instructions” field to designate that the gift should be used for Hurricane Katrina relief. Donations can also be made through your church, or by making checks out to American Baptist Churches and using the memo line to signify OGHS Katrina Relief. Mail checks to: American Baptist Churches USA OGS Accounting Office, PO Box 851, Valley Forge, PA 19482-0851.  The One Great Hour of Sharing website has information about disaster relief and how ABCUSA works with various partners to respond to needs that arise.  Through the General Secretary’s PrayerNet, the Office of the General Secretary and other national staff members are covenanting together with American Baptists to pray for various needs in our denominational family. The prayer content over the next weeks will focus on the relief efforts and circumstances surrounding Hurricane Katrina.  Join with us in the many ways that American Baptist Churches USA is answering God’s call to respond and to minister to those in need with prayer, purpose, and passion.  Centered in Christ and United in Mission, Rev. Dr. A. Roy Medley

Christmas Around the Corner - Opportunity to Give - Cameron Community Ministries: The kids have just gone back to school, and we're already thinking of Christmas.  The Holidays are busy here!  Each year we serve Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, and opportunities to serve a meal are usually booked by October.  But there are so many other ways to serve:  Meal Support:

Christmas Investors - each year we offer neighborhood families a chance to earn Christmas Dinner and gifts for their families by volunteering to work 10 hours per family member.  Churches and civic organizations adopts them and provides items for a holiday meal and some of the gifts from their wish list.  We ask that sponsors do not exceed the $75 guidelines.   Showering one family is overwhelming, and not really fair to all investors.  If you can afford to do more, we ask that you consider additional families.

Kids Christmas Inventors - During the fall our kids earn "points" through good behavior and grades, reading books and completing homework.  They spend these points at a "Christmas Shop," buying gifts for special adult sin their lives.  Your organization can help stock store shelves with $5-$10 gifts such as gloves, bath fragrance kits, wallets, towels sets, jewelry.  We especially need gifts for men, including flashlights, tool kits, wallets and watches.

Teen Gifts - Many donate toys for kids for our annual Christmas party but we are always short of teen gifts.  Your youth group could shop for teen times like mini makeup kits, small gift cards, radios & earphones and games.

Dear Friends, As the nation watches attentively to the relief operations caused by the destructive force of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, your Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross has begun to prepare for local widespread disasters by making sure that we have the proper resources on hand.  We are asking your help in making sure that we have adequate resources.  We are in desperate need of shelter groups, blood drive donor recruiting groups, fundraising groups, etc. to help the Chapter in times of local need.  We are asking service groups, church groups, senior citizen groups, neighborhoods, etc. to form a shelter team or a blood drive call group that the American Red Cross could utilize during a major disaster.  The goal of the local American Red Cross disaster plan is to ensure that the Chapter is able to utilize local resources for at least 48 hours.  At that time National Red Cross staff would begin to descend into the area to help with the relief efforts.  Right now we are unable to meet the human resource demands that would be placed on the local Chapter during a large-scale disaster.    Group training is a relatively easy and quick process.  Community groups can be trained in less than two hours of classroom time in how to manage and staff an American Red Cross shelter, or under one hour of classroom time in how to become a blood donor recruiter.  For more information, please contact the Chapter's Disaster Coordinator Woody Seufert at 315-331-3783.  Thank you in advance for your consideration in partnering with the American Red Cross in preparing Wayne County.  Sincerely, James F. Love, Executive Director

Dear Friends, Never has our financial plight been as dramatic as it was when last we appealed to you for assistance.  And you did not let us down.  Each one was vital to our immediate survival.  Although we are still not up to full staff, the cook is back, the kitchen is now open and we are serving free lunches again to the delight of the people we serve.  You helped us do that, as well as pay the bills, and we are very grateful for your generosity and your faith in us.  Each day when we thank God for our survival we than Him for giving us you.  God bless you, Janis Thomason-Mussen, Executive Director, Wayne County Rural Ministry / Come-Unity Center, Inc.
